The hotel itself is a 17th Century building, once home to the Philpot sisters, who are well known for their fossil hunting in the area, the Philpot museum in Lyme was given in honour of the sisters. It has also been scheduled as 'of historic interest' and was immortalised by Beatrix Potter in the 'Tale of Little Pig Robinson'.
