The White House is a small, friendly, 18th century
Georgian guest house with, from the rear, fine views of the
Dorset coastline and only a short walk to the beach, gardens,
shops and restaurants in the historic resort of Lyme Regis,
Dorset, UK. It has private, off road, car parking.
Lyme Regis, situated in the most westerly point
of Dorset, is a small historic town set in a coombe on a wide
bay with its famous 13th century Cobb harbour. - The first
historical records date back to 774 and a royal charter was
granted by Edward I in 1824 - During the civil unrest Lyme Regis
was a Parliamentarian town and was besieged by the Royalists.
Later the Duke of Monmouth landed on the beach to rally forces
to overthrow James II.
Mary Anning, a local girl, became famous when she discovered the
remains of a prehistoric reptile in 1811.
- Jane Austin visited Lyme in 1804 and set her novel
'Persuasion' here. - John Fowles, the author, is resident in the
town and set his most famous book 'The French Lieutenant's
Woman' in Lyme. The film based on the book used many locations
in and around the town.
Lyme Regis offers many activities for a holiday including safe
bathing, sailing, windsurfing, deep sea fishing, diving, boat
trips, fossil hunting, golf, bowls, museums, cinema, coastal and
country walks. - It is also an ideal centre to visit many other
places of natural beauty and historic interest. |
